After graduating from Clinton High School, Gary attended Mississippi State University where he majored in Business Statistics and Data Processing. While at MSU, Gary worked on the staff of the Reflector, MSU's campus newspaper.

Immediately upon graduating from MSU in May 1970, Gary accepted a position in the Houston, Texas office of an international accounting and consulting firm. He was a member of the firm's management consulting practice, which developed and implemented software systems for client companies. In 1981, he was admitted as a partner in the firm's Management Information Consulting Division.

In December 1971, Gary married Rebecca Landrum (CHS '68). The various projects to which Gary was assigned permitted him and Rebecca to live temporarily in St. Charles, Illinois, and Galveston, Texas in addition to the time they spent in Houston.

In 1983, Gary accepted a position with a regional accounting firm in Jackson, Mississippi to develop a management consulting practice.

However, in 1988, Gary returned to the international accounting firm in their Tulsa, Oklahoma office and was responsible for the Business Systems Consulting practice in the state of Oklahoma.

Three years later, Gary accepted a position at a nationwide healthcare organization in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was subsequently promoted to Vice President of Information Systems & CIO and continued in that role for four years.

In 1996, Gary accepted the role of Vice President of Information Systems at a medical malpractice insurance company, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. And, he continued in this role until a management restructuring occurred in 2002.

From midyear 2003 until late June 2004, Gary served as the Interim CIO at Commonwealth Industries in Louisville, KY. While Gary commuted for this twelve-month timeframe, Rebecca kept things together at their home in Birmingham.

Gary served as Director - Information Systems at the Alabama Department of Education in Montgomery, Alabama, from 2005 - 2012.

Effective January 2014, Gary contracted through Auburn University Montgomery's Center for Advvanced Technologies to provide IT consulting services and retired in February 2016.

Gary and Rebecca have one son, Rob. He received an undergraduate degree and an MBA in Aviation Management from Auburn University. Rob is a commerical pilot.  He flies for Southwest Airlines and is based in Houston, TX.
